Orbital Marine Power Ltd propose to install two commercial demonstrator turbines, model O2.4, at the European Marine Energy Centre’s (EMEC) Fall of Warness tidal test site in Eday, Orkney.
Challenge
As part of the new marine licence application to Marine Scotland under Section 20(1) of the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010, NASH Maritime was asked to undertake device-specific Navigational Risk Assessment (NRA).
Solution
NASH Maritime knew the site well having recently undertaken site wide risk assessments on behalf of EMEC for all four tidal and wave test sites.
For the NRA, we examined the tow-out, installation, operating and decommissioning of these devices.
We considered the views of key stakeholders, reviewed current vessel traffic management and adjacent offshore activities, analysed vessel traffic data around the site along with historical accident data.
A structured risk assessment was conducted that identified hazards, assessed the likelihood and consequence of each, and derived a risk score.
Our conclusion was that the proposed Orbital Devices at the Fall of Warness test site would not have a significant impact on navigational safety and ongoing marine operations.
