Assessing risk to safety of navigation associated with DP World London Gateway Berth 4 site investigations

Helping DP World gain consent for bore-hole drilling

Assessing risk to safety of navigation associated with DP World London Gateway Berth 4 site investigations

DP World London Gateway are building another berth at its container terminal in Essex. This fourth berth will provide more capacity to handle the world’s largest vessels.

To inform the design of this new berth, ground investigations were required. To assist in obtaining licences for the drilling of bore holes from the Port of London Authority, London Gateway commissioned a navigational risk assessment from NASH Maritime.

What we did

We began by developing a baseline understanding of vessel traffic and navigation in the area by reviewing documentation, proposed operations, and localised vessel traffic at nearby berths and in the navigation channel.

Building from this we undertook a navigation and marine safety review of the key hazards and impacts associated with the ground investigation activities and identified what, if any, additional risk controls might be required.

We also undertook consultation with the statutory harbour authorities concerned, Port of London Authority and DP World London Gateway.

This culminated in a technical note to accompany the River Works License application to the Port of London Authority.

Construction of the fourth berth commenced in October 2022.
